Good Morning - Time To Wake UP!Well it has been quite a trip and its time for a rest - not! I had worked all day and was ready for bed. Regina said her arthritis was bothering her pretty much and would come to bed in a while. She had gone to the Doctor the day before and had some test run today. The doctor told her it was arthritis but prescribed nitro for her. We questioned that at the time but he just said it would help if it got worse. I had been asleep for a couple of hours and Regina woke me up her shoulder was hurting terribly and was radiating down her arm. "I think I am having a heart Attack", she told me. Out of bed grabbed my clothes and finished buttoning my shirt as we went out the door. The hospital was 40 minutes away it would take an ambulance 25 min to get here so the best scenario was to go... We got to the hospital in 20 - it was now 2:00 in the morning. We pulled up to ER there was a doctor at the door taking a break I opened her door and told him what was happening. He grabbed a wheelchair and took her inside while I found a parking place. The doctor had her in an examining room and running tests. He confirmed she was having a heart attack or at least was well on the way to having one. He told us of a drug that just today had been released for testing and they were one of the sites - he explained what it did and possible side effects. Again he stressed it was still experimental . She opted to try it - he gave her a shot and she immediately felt better. He kept her on the monitors for another 4 hours then sent her up to the cardiac care floor. Her heart doctor was there bright and early and said that the drug seemed to have done what it was suppose to, but it was only a patch not a fix. This was Friday morning and Monday was a holiday. The doctor wanted to schedule a cardio-cath for Tuesday morning. He said he wasn't sure of the time, because of the holiday, the room would be pretty well booked up. Later that evening he returned and said the room was booked for Tuesday but there had been a cancellation Saturday he was able to get it for 9:00 AM. Saturdays were limited and only a few available procedure were done then and most only on an emergency basis. Saturday morning, 7:00 am, I was with her in her room. She began to have a tightness in her chest and her chest began to hurt. I could see the muscles drawing in her chest every time a wave would hit her - We had pushed the nurse call button and since she was wearing a monitor we figured a nurse would be there in a hurry. Nothing happened. I looked out at the nurses station - three nurses were standing with backs to the monitor and call lights talking. I went and told them Regina was having another attack. "Oh couldn't be I don't see anything on the monitor", one said as another went toward the room. When she arrived she immediately called the doctor. He was in the OR preparing for the routine and told the nurse to bring Regina down, "don't wait for the gurney just send bed and all." So away they went. About an hour and 25 minutes went by when the phone rang. It was the doctor - that scared me - but he said that he did the cardio-cath and just as he reached the problem area a clot closed up the artery so he pushed the small cardio camera through the clot and followed up with angioplasty. Regina stayed in CCU (Cardio Care Unit) for the next three days. I only got to see her 10 min. every 8 hours. I worked a lot of jigsaw puzzles in that waiting room. She went back to a room and her first meal was shrimp. Shrimp? I thought that stuff was loaded with cholesterol - it is but mostly the HDL (good kind) . We talked for a long time about what was going on and what was happening. We both decided it was one loud wake up call. We both joined hands and prayed a prayer of thanksgiving and praise for bringing us through the time and especially for the care Regina received. We followed the events and were amazed at how things transpired. She was first treated for arthritis but the doctor gave her nitro pills which she had taken before we went to the hospital that night. Had she not the attack would have been beyond what any medicine could help. The attending doctor for the ER was standing out front and ER was not busy that night. Saved time by me not having to unload and find the right person to care for her. The new drug had just been received at the hospital and Regina was the first at that hospital to receive it. She was in ER for the rest of the night. The next morning she was moved to a room with telemetry attached. Her cardiologist set up a cardio-cath procedure and was ready with the angioplasty equipment Her procedure was scheduled for Wednesday and changed to Saturday due to the Monday holiday. Saturday Morning Regina had been some what restless then began complaining of chest pain. We pushed the call button - no response. I quickly went into the hall and saw the nurses talking at the desk. I told them Regina was having another attack. The monitor didn't show it. They rushed to stabilize her and called the doctor who was preparing for her procedure. He told them to get her to the operating room (O.R.) and not to worry about transportation. They took her bed and all and off they went. He immediately began the cardio-cath and later told us that just as he got to where the problem was it closed up, so he poked a hole in the clot with the camera. Following that he immediately went did the angioplasty. - if the doctor had not been there when he was and got her into the O.R. when they did - she would have probably not survived. Coincident? Maybe - but it sure seems to me that it was orchestrated right to the minute. too many things, too many times. We could see God's hands on us through this and we were truly awaken to the fact that God has everything under control. His way is not our way and His way is perfect in all things. We know that He can call us home any time He is ready. Life is but a wisp of smoke that is quickly dispersed, a candle flame snuffed out in a breath. His choice was to keep Regina's light burning.
